Having been introduced to pottery by my inspiring art teacher at school, Peter Colwill, with his encouragement I went on to study ceramics at what was then Brighton College of Art (1971-75).
Although I have also worked with hand-building and sculpture, throwing was always my main interest, concentrating mainly on functional items and always aiming for pleasing forms with a tactile but practical feel.
On leaving college I spent three years in a small pottery factory in Denmead, Hampshire, designing and producing a few items to go alongside their range. When the opportunity came I moved out on my own into a small workshop to develop and produce my own range of hand-thrown domestic ware – and continued until the early 1990s when I found it harder and harder to make enough profit to feed a growing family.
I have always had an interest in music and instruments and I made a career switch to piano tuning and repair as my main activity, which I found myself well suited to, but I kept some equipment for pottery as well as other crafts. This has enabled me, as time allows, to create without the pressure of having to earn a living from what I make.
What interests me now, as always, is making and mending. On this site you may see some of the objects I have produced over the years. Some of the recent ceramics may be available for sale, so please get in touch (via my piano tuning website) if interested!
